Low Calorie French Toast Recipe - Low Fat Breakfast Recipe
64
A breakfast favorite loved by many is French toast. The original recipes calls for lots of butter and uses fattening cream. The good news is, it’s easy to make a low calorie, low fat French toast and even better - it will taste just as good as the original. After you taste this low calorie breakfast recipe, it’ll be hard for you or your guests to believe that what they’re eating is actually healthy. This recipe has lots of fiber from the whole grain bread and has protein from the eggs.
You’ll Need:
- Whole wheat or whole grain bread - Day old works great.
- Egg beaters or egg whites
- Non-fat milk
- Vanilla Flavoring
- I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Spray
- Splenda
- Cinnamon
Directions:
- Mix your egg beaters or egg whites with a little bit of non-fat milk. A good rule of thumb is about 1 tbsp of milk for every egg you use. This helps the bread sog up the milk and egg mixture.
- Add desired amount of vanilla flavoring, cinnamon and splenda to mixture.
- Soak each side of the bread in the milk and egg mixture. Don’t let it sit in too long, as you don’t want it to become too soggy and break apart.
- Pre-heat your cooking pan to medium heat. Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Cook for a minute or two on each side until nicely browned.
- Serve on a plate and sprinkle with more cinnamon and splenda, if desired. For some more ideas of what to serve with French toast, check out the variations below!
- Enjoy!
Variations:
- For added protein, I love to use whole wheat bread that is made with extra protein. Look for it in the bread aisle at your supermarket!
- Pile on lots of fruit and use fat-free Cool Whip for a low-cal Belgian French toast that’s too good to be true.
- Peel and diced some apples, generously coat in cinnamon and bake in the microwave for 1 minute. Serve on top of the French toast. It tastes just like Apple Pie!
- My all-time favorite is to pile sliced strawberries and cool-whip on top.
- Serve with sugar-free maple syrup and turkey sausage on the side for an extra protein boost.
How to Make French Toast Video
Here is a video I found of a gentleman cooking French toast the traditional way, on top of the stove and in the oven. If you have some extra time to prepare your French toast that way, then you might want to check out this great video.
